Lothar Matthaus’ iron fist on the Bulgarian bench probably brought a lot of hope to their national footie after a long time. They’ve won their last 2 matches, first against Wales in the qualifiers and then against Saudi Arabia in a friendly after that. Matthaus didn’t manage to make Berbatov change his mind and return to the national team while Aston Villa’s captain Stylian Petrov is injured and will skip this match. Parma’s striker Valeri Bojinov and Bolton’s Martin Petrov have been called up for this match. I think Bulgaria is a favorite in this match but Serbia is traditionally always a hard nut to crack. It will be hard for Bulgaria but they’re playing at home and they have to revenge Serbia for the heavy defeat they suffered a few years ago against them in a friendly.
New coach, new beginning
Vladimir Petrovic is the new Serbia’s coach, and a lot is expected from him, mainly to continue the trend Radomir Antic has started, meaning to make some other new faces known and further develop the team and return the team’s spirit to the high level after it kind of dropped following the riots in Genoa. There are as many as 5 new names in the squad out of which there is Gent’s goalie Jorgavcevic. Lomic has been called up to play as well in defense, but the squad looks to be shaken up due to the riots, and UEFA’s sanctions even today. This time they’re not favorites but they are gonna try to show a good performance and go for the win in the Bulgarian capital.
Revenge for the humiliation
Both sides with new coaches, on one hand Matthaus who knows Serbian footie well and on the other side, Petrovic Pizon, a legend as a player but not a very good coach, at least not yet.
